Joint Stock Company “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor”

JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” is a Russian leader in development of naval underwater systems. The company has its origin in the Military Department Central Research and Scientific Laboratory found in 1914.

JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” has been developing its own history from 1943 when the State Defence Committee set up the NII-400 Institute for R&D in the field of mine, torpedo and sweeping capabilities. The start-up company embraced areas of a former pilot plant and a boat base in Leningrad.

Development of the newest mine, torpedo and sweeping systems together with upgrade of the production versions were the main goals of NII-400.

In 1948 the special-purpose branch of NII-400 was founded in the town of Lomonosov to provide the thermal torpedoes.

In the 1950s the Institute evolved into the diversified enterprise which was operating complex laboratory and testbed facilities, a fleet of testing ships and pilot factories.

In 1966 the Order of Labor Red Flag was awarded to the Institute for advances in naval capabilities. Later in the year it got another name, “Gidropribor”.

In 1969 the company was transformed into the “Gidropribor” Central Scientific and Research Institute to be affiliated to the CKB-145 Construction Department. The developing and expanding company became the parent enterprise in the branch. In 1972 a subdivision was set up in the city of Uralsk followed by the “Kasatka” subdivision in the city of Gagra in 1974. Special departments of the Institute were successfully run in towns of Caspiysk (Dagestan), Petropavlovsk (Kazakhstan), Theodosia (the Crimea) and Przhevalsk (Kyrgyzstan).

In 1973 the “Uran” Scientific Production Association was founded incorporating the “Dvigatel” plant and the branches of the Institute, with “Gidropribor” to be the parent enterprise.

In 1982 the Order of October Revolution was awarded to “Uran” for outstanding achievements in engineering activity.

In 1991, with the end of “Uran”, “Gidropribor”, the “Dvigatel” plant and the Lomonosov branch (named the “Morteplotechnika” Scientific and Research Institute) got independent state companies. The rest of branches and departments with the considerable part of facilities were outside Russia, in the neighboring countries.

In 1994 the Institute was given the State Scientific Center status which is still valid.

Nowadays the company has been reorganized into 100% state ownership JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” following the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation. The Concern is the parent body of the integrated structure to incorporate JSCs “Morteplotechnika” (town of Lomonosov), “Zavod “Dvigatel” (St.-Petersburg), “Zavod “Dagdizel” (town of Caspiysk), and “Uralelement” (town of Verkhny Ufaley).

The whole time of Concern’s activities was rather fruitful with more than 180 models of torpedoes, mines, MCMs, acoustic countermeasures and other dedicated systems (including about 70 models and modifications of torpedoes, 48 models and modifications of mines and torpedo mines) developed and delivered to the Russian Navy. Over a long period some of the systems were unique in world practice while the others still are.

About 95% of the current Russian naval underwater weapons were developed either by the Concern or with its direct participation. 19 efforts got the Lenin Prize, the State Prize and the Russian Government Prize. Above 1800 workers were awarded orders and medals.

Over 5000 patents and author's certificates were given.

JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” is the large-scale scientific production center that develops and makes sea underwater weapon and special-purpose assets for the Russian and foreign navies purposes.

Due to to its well-established structure, the Concern supports complete operational cycle from fundamental/applied research and full-scale development, test and evaluation to laboratory and environmental tests followed by prototype transfer into the large-scale production. Patent support and performance control are also provided.

To do this, the Concern operates dedicated scientific production units, design and technological departments, laboratory and testbed facilities (hydroacoustic basins, climate chambers, shock and shake tables, autoclaves, electric and thermal engine testers, test benches for control and test systems etc.) including a fleet of test ships.

Our cost-effective, high-performance and reliable products are safe to store and transport and easy to use and maintain.

Scientific and technological advances make it possible to increase performance and extend lifetime of weapons while saving financial resources through designed-in upgrade capabilities. Such an approach was inspired by the economic circumstances both in Russia and in the Concern resulting in extensive improvement of almost every type of underwater system.

In 2015 the Concern has been entered in the “List of Backbone Organizations of the Russian Federation” as a first-rate corporate body within the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation to exercise a significant influence on the gross domestic product, the population employment and the social stability. It is the leading company in the vertical-integrated system of the industrial sector.

Substantial part in the present Concern’s booking is the export orders: in this case the company not only supplies pre-developed weaponry and supports its lifecycle to the point of utilization but also develops new systems to suit customer’s requirements (including the joint designing). High-performance and rather low-cost products of the Concern are in firm demand abroad. Over the past decades a great quantity of models has been supplied to many countries including India, Venezuela, China, Vietnam, Algeria, etc. within the defence cooperation. Now 24 countries around the world use more than 36 models of Concern-designed systems.

JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” is a general laureate of numerous international exhibitions and shows with our products being of interest to naval experts and representatives from Australia, Vietnam, Germany, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, UAE, Poland, Finland, France, Sweden, Republic of South Africa, etc.

In solving the current problems JSC “Concern “Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor” looks forward. The innovative scenario means creative ways to meet all the present and future challenges.
